Electives

See the rotation guide for a list of options for electives

Electives

Electives are supported to encourage you to pursue your individual interests.  Have fun with them!

Setting up an Elective

  1. Any elective requires that you initiate the inquiry regarding the experience.
ex:  if you want to do a dermatology elective in a specific town, you need to contact the offices and discuss the structure of the rotation
  2. Document a schedule (10 half-days/week) – Include your physical location during each of these sessions and who your supervising physician(s) will be.
Please note that you must get direct approval from all providers who will be involved at any level in the teaching experience.
If you plan to spend 5 half-days each week with 2 different providers, you will need to discuss this with both providers and create your schedule based upon agreed upon hours with each provider each week throughout the rotation.  (You do not want to show up for a rotation & find that only 1 provider is willing to have a learner with them.)
You must account for any days a supervising provider is out of the office and who will assume those responsibilities during the provider’s absence.  Each provider will submit an evaluation after the rotation
  1. You are expected to work hours that parallel the office hours
(ie:  if the office is closed on weekends and you do not have call/rounding responsibilities, you will be off that weekend as well)
  1. You need to develop Goals and Objectives for the elective based on the ACGME Competencies (as with other rotations).  Feel free to use the established Family Medicine Residency rotation goals & objectives as a guide.
  1. The complete Schedule and Goals & Objectives need to be signed by all providers.  I would also highly suggest that you review your schedule with the office manager/coordinator  — sadly, sometimes coordinators know the providers’ schedule, days off, hours and style better than the provider and can avoid schedule mishaps.
  1. Submit the Goals & Objectives and signed schedule to the Program Director and the Program Coordinator.
Electives for the first half of the year need to be submitted by March 15
Electives for the second half of the year need to be submitted by October 15.
The Einstein Montgomery FMR needs to establish a Program Letter of Agreement (PLA) between Einstein FMR and each educational site well before initiation of the elective.  This document is one means of protecting you and the site medicolegally.  It crosses many administrative desks to get signed by all parties, like any other paperwork, so it may take several weeks to get a PLA in place.
  1. Once submitted, the material will be reviewed by the Program Director for approval.
  1. Travel and housing arrangements are your responsibility, however, please do not make any travel, housing, etc arrangements prior to receiving formal approval.
  1. The Program Director will determine how to address your continuity clinic during your elective.   If you will not be at the FMC, you are expected to review your patient schedule, direct their care while you are away, and arrange for follow up with you upon your return.
